How to Use Brassager Brass Darkening Solution
Brassager Brass Darkening Solution (also known as Brass Ager) is a professional-grade, pre-mixed formula designed to turn shiny raw brass, copper, bronze, and sheet tin into a rich, authentic antique patina in minutes. Follow this step-by-step application guide to achieve perfect, reliable results for your hardware, home decor, or antique restoration projects.
Important Pre-Application Safety & Compatibility
- Metal Compatibility: Brassager reacts only with raw, unlacquered copper-based metals (solid brass, copper, bronze) and sheet tin. It will not darken stainless steel, aluminum, iron, chrome, or zinc unless they have been heavily copper-plated.
- No Plating or Lacquers: The solution requires direct contact with bare metal. It will not react if the item has a clear factory protective coating.
- Safety First: Work in a well-ventilated space. Wear protective rubber gloves and eye protection before opening the bottle.
Step-by-Step Application Guide
Step 1: Prep & Strip the Metal Surface
Any factory lacquer, clear clear coat, grease, or oil will completely block the chemical aging reaction. You must strip the surface down to 100% bare metal.
- Apply paint stripper, acetone, or nail polish remover to break down any clear lacquer coatings.
- Scrub the entire surface using high-grade #0000 steel wool to remove loosened coatings and light oxidation.
- Wash the piece thoroughly with soap and water, then dry completely with a clean paper towel.
- Crucial Tip: Do not touch the bare metal with your bare hands after cleaning! Natural skin oils from your fingers will block the solution and create uneven, splotchy dark spots. Use clean gloves or tongs.
Step 2: Apply the Solution (Submersion or Brush)
Brassager changes color gradually, giving you total control over the depth of your dark rustic finish without causing dimensional changes to the piece.
- For Small Items (Screws, Hinges, Pulls): Pour the ready-to-use Brassager liquid into a glass or plastic container. Completely submerge the clean metal items into the liquid. Watch the color transform over 1 to 3 minutes.
- For Large Items (Lamp Bases, Decor): Use a clean paintbrush, sponge, or rag to wipe or brush the solution directly onto the bare metal surface evenly.
Step 3: Rinse to Stop the Reaction
As soon as the metal reaches your desired shade of antique darkness, remove it from the solution immediately.
- Plunge the piece into a bath of clean water or rinse it thoroughly under a running faucet.
- The water wash neutralizes the active chemicals and instantly stops the darkening process.
- Blot the hardware completely dry with a soft cloth or paper towel.
Step 4: Highlight & Adjust the Finish
Freshly aged metal can sometimes look solid black or dark grey. To give it a beautiful dimensional antique look with highlighted reliefs:
Take a piece of dry #0000 steel wool and gently buff the raised edges, details, or high spots of your hardware. This lightly removes the dark oxidation layer from the surface, revealing glimpses of the bright underlying warm brass underneath while keeping the deep crevices dark and aged.
Protecting Your Antique Finish
Once you are completely satisfied with the look of your aged patina, you can leave it raw to age naturally over time, or seal it to lock in the exact shade. To protect the finish from future handling oils and oxygen, apply a thin coat of clear paste wax, furniture wax, or a clear matte lacquer spray seal once the item is completely dry.
